ARCHITECTURAL

HISTORY & CULTURE

As how the name of the subject sounds, it aimed to equip students with the knowledge and ability to recognise and recall appropriate verbal architectural vocabulary when referring to building types, styles and periods, to exemplify and classify the sequence of historical periods and how they are represented architecturally. Most of all, it taught me how to analyse a building with regards to its design intention, concept, patterns and contextual relationships.

Project - precedent study on Chartres Chathedral

Part 1 - Essay

Part 2 - analysis presentation board

I've learnt how to analyse a building according to its structure, geomtery, its circulation, spatial organisation such as unit to whole and symmetry and balance, and building section.

part 3 - model

This model-making taught me how careful we have to be when it comes to balsa wood. More importantly, I've gained better understanding of the  High Gothic edifice - Chartres Cathedral in terms of its structure, its verticality, its natural lighting involving the placement of the rose windows, stained glass windows and the significance of all the sculptures in it.
